Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner Level
Learners will explore root words and selected prefixes and suffixes, enabling them to create new words. The guide for each lesson will be "Word Roots" by The Critical Thinking Co. Each session will follow a structured format, including a brief review, the introduction of new concepts, and practical application. Lessons are thoughtfully crafted using Google Slides and incorporate interactive exercises to deepen understanding and engagement. Students will participate in games, slides, video clips, and discussions to reinforce their learning. Assessments will be conducted at the end of the course, with weekly reviews to ensure thorough preparation.
Learning Goals
Learners will determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade level reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
Learners will  use and apply  common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word.

Lesson 1:
Roots: micro, scope, tele, acro
 The learner will understand that roots can stand alone or be part of larger words. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify these root words; "micro, scope, tele, and acro," they will be able to explain their meanings, and apply them to new words to create and understand new vocabulary.

Prefixes: uni, dis, re- un-
 Learners will understand and use the prefixes uni-, dis-, re-, and un- to form new words. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify these prefixes, explain their meanings, and apply them to root words to create and understand new vocabulary.

Suffixes: able, -full, -ble
 Learners will understand and use the suffixes -able, -ful, and -ble to form new words. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify these suffixes, explain their meanings, and apply them to root words to create and understand new vocabulary.

Prefixes and Roots: cycle; uni- bi- tri-
 Learners will be able to identify, understand, and use the prefixes "uni-", "bi-", and "tri-" as well as the root "cycle" to form and comprehend words, enhancing their vocabulary and word analysis skills.

Learning Needs
Students with dyslexia will receive specialized strategies and approaches tailored to their needs. Instruction will include multisensory techniques and a structured literacy approach.
