Class Experience

Are you concerned about your child's ability to succeed in school, pay attention, manage their emotions, and thrive in life?

😅 It can be disheartening, and honestly frustrating, to see your child struggle with organization, time management, focus, and self-control, which are all crucial skills for success in life. These difficulties take hard work and dedication to overcome, not only from the student, but from all the people that surround and support them like parents, teachers, family and friends.

Difficulties with executive functioning skills can lead to stress, frustration, hindered academic and personal growth, and failure to accomplish goals. I understand that as a parent, you want to provide your child with the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

👋 Let me introduce myself! My name is Indya, I am the teacher for this class. I studied hard to earn a Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Florida and am a licensed Speech Language Pathologist. Learning how to treat executive functioning disorders is a part of our training! Allow me to use my expertise in this field to support your child on their journey. Together, we'll help them overcome obstacles, build resilience, and equip them with the skills they need to succeed and thrive in life.

Executive functioning skills are a set of cognitive processes that enable individuals to manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions effectively in order to achieve goals and complete tasks. These skills are critical for success in various aspects of life, including academics, work, and daily routines. Here are some key executive functioning skills:

1. Working Memory: The ability to hold and manipulate information temporarily in your mind. It's crucial for tasks like following multi-step instructions and solving problems.
2. Inhibition: The capacity to control impulsive or automatic responses and behaviors. It includes being able to resist distractions and stay focused on a task.
3. Task Initiation: The skill of starting tasks or activities without procrastination. Individuals with strong task initiation skills can begin assignments or projects independently.
4. Planning and Organization: The ability to set goals, create plans, and arrange tasks in a logical order. It involves breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps.
5. Time Management: The capacity to estimate, allocate, and manage time effectively. People with strong time management skills can prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
6. Cognitive Flexibility: The capability to adapt to changing situations and switch between different tasks or activities. It involves being open to new ideas and strategies.
7. Emotional Regulation: The skill of managing emotions and reactions in a healthy and constructive way. This includes handling stress, frustration, and disappointment.
8. Self-Monitoring: The ability to assess and evaluate one's own performance and adjust behaviors and strategies as needed. It's crucial for self-improvement and learning from mistakes.
9. Goal Setting: The capacity to establish clear objectives and work towards achieving them. Effective goal setting involves breaking down long-term goals into smaller, achievable milestones.

During some classes, I may ask your learner to get up from their computer to perform certain tasks like a scavenger hunt to retrieve something and bring it back and/or to do silly movements like hop, spin, and crawl as part of an activity. Please make sure your learner is able to move safely, and provide supervision if needed.

Here is an overview of some of the main topics we may cover (depending on flow of class). If any of these topics are very important to you, please message me so I can try my best to cover it:

1. Perspective taking

2. Working memory and attention (through an ice breaker memory game)

3. Creating a plan to reach a goal (with a fun group activity)

4. Practice reviewing goal outcomes and adjusting as needed (staying flexible)

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Hope to see your learner in the classroom!
