Class Experience

Students are expected to learn and understand many mathematical concepts during the first few years of school. Each class will be delivered in a "stand alone" manner which will allow students to join in for a selected class or classes, or they may take the entire series of six classes as an overall review of these concepts.

We will review different mathematical concepts each week. The classes will be structured around a PowerPoint presentation. During each class, we will collaboratively review material pertinent to the day's lesson. Then, I will teach the concepts that we will be covering that day. Next, I will demonstrate how to solve problems using the material that was just taught. Then, we will work out some problems together so that it all begins to make sense. Next, it will be the students’ turn to practice their skills. Finally, we will review the material learned and I will respond to any additional questions. In order for the students to keep track of everything that was covered, they should be prepared to document key facts taught during the presentation as well as many of the examples that will be done in class. That way, they will have excellent notes to refer to whether they choose to take just one class, a few classes, or all of the classes.

Concepts for the week of TBD: We will review several single digit addition strategies, such as using tally marks or counting on. Then, we will work on addition with 2-digit numbers (without regrouping).

Concepts for the week of TBD: We will review several single digit subtraction strategies, such as using pictures or counting back. Then, we will work on subtraction with 2-digit numbers (without regrouping).

Concepts for the week of TBD: This will be an introduction to fractions class. We will cover basic concepts and vocabulary. Then, we will work on comparing fractions, and we will do some simple problems involving addition and subtraction with fractions.

Concepts for the week of TBD: We will cover the names and amounts of U.S. coins, and practice adding them together.

Concepts for the week of TBD: We will cover telling time to the hour, 1/2 hour, and 1/4 hour on (12 & 24 hour) digital and analog clocks.

Concepts for the week of TBD: We will cover basic (U.S. and Metric) measurements pertaining to length, capacity, and weight.

PLEASE NOTE: This six-week series will most likely repeat after the final date listed. Students may join at any time.

I have compiled this list of concepts based upon my many years of teaching young learners. I believe that it is important for students to have the proper instruction, knowledge, tools, and practice prior to moving on to more difficult mathematical studies. I am hoping that this ongoing math class will help.

Hello!
I am very excited to introduce myself to you. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Additionally, I have worked at a local school district for approximately thirteen years. During that time, I assisted a Speech and Language Pathologist in lessons centered around articulation, language arts, fluency, and social skills. Most recently, I have enjoyed working as a Substitute Teacher for the same district.
I have a great deal of experience teaching many different subjects, but I especially enjoy math and language arts. My goal is to always make learning a productive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. As such, appropriate rules and routines are set, so that all students can do their best work in a friendly environment.
When I am not busy teaching, I enjoy watching sports, listening to music, and spending time with my family.
