We will begin with the sound of the bell to call us back home to our breathe. We will determine as a group what it means to be mindful and how it serves us and others around us. We will practice a guided meditation that asks us to imagine ourselves as different elements of nature, which will allow us to 1) instill in us beneficial characteristics of the earth and 2) connect to the earth, honoring our inter-being. For example, in meditation we will imagine ourselves as a mountain, the students will feel what it is like to be strong and stable as a mountain, while not being rigid or closed off, but open to things like water, which flows along its crevices, and connected to the sky, which shares its space. Such an exercise is meant to encourage the capacity for strength, stability, fluidity, joy, and connection in the spirit of the student. The student will receive a copy of the meditation script to use whenever they are feeling defeated or disconnected.
Learning Goals
Students will cultivate the practice of stopping, listening, and breathing in order to transform their moments of suffering into joy. It is my hope that after this class, whenever they are feeling hurt or defeated, they will practice the meditation on their own.
