Beginner Level
Hello, parents and students! Welcome to the first semester (two total) of our beginner IEW class. We are going to take the intimidation out of composition writing and discover the enjoyment that lies within. In this class, we will gently stroll along the IEW path as we learn to create key word outlines, write paragraphs, and explore various stylist techniques such as ly adverbs, who/which clauses, strong verbs, and more. Each week we will use People and Places in Our Community by the Institute for Excellence in Writing as our guide, while also reading rich children's literature books, learning new vocabulary words, and playing games. You will need to purchase the People and Places in Our Community student book for this class. Paper, pencils, crayons, a 3 ring binder, and a ziplock bag for vocabulary cards are also recommended. https://iew.com/shop/products/people-and-places-our-community-student-book There will be assignments each week, but you as the parent will determine the extent to which your student participates in those assignments. IEW recommends this particular book for first and second graders, but it can very easily be adapted for older grades. I have personally had a lot of success teaching this book to third and fourth graders. Each class will consist of a community building time with friends, reader review (1-2 students may choose to share their paper with the class - volunteer basis only, not required), an IEW lesson, and story time. ✏️ Week 1 Lesson 1 The Carpenter/ Big Machines ✏️ Week 2 Lesson 2 Building Roads/ Snowplows ✏️ Week 3 Lesson 3 The Librarian/ The Library ✏️ Week 4 Lesson 4 Pilots ✏️ Week 5 Lesson 5 Trains ✏️ Week 6 Lesson 6 Mail Carrier ✏️ Week 7 Lesson 7 Recycling ✏️ Week 8 Lesson 8 The Bank ✏️ Week 9 Lesson 9 The Bus ✏️ Week 10 Lesson 10 The Emergency Room Part 1 ✏️ Week 11 Lesson 11 The Emergency Room Part 2 ✏️ Week 12 Lesson 12 The Rescue Squad Part 1 ✏️ Week 13 Lesson 13 The Rescue Squad Part 2 ✏️ Week 14 Special Source text about Turkeys provided by the teacher ✏️ Week 15 Lesson 15 Grammar Games & End of Semester Celebration
