Homework
1 hour per week. Recipes will be shared in advance and the learner will be encouraged to create a book of recipes with their own notes attached.Class Experience
All children are eager to be in the kitchen! In this child-safe, private class we will use basic kitchen implements to assemble many different dishes. The class will begin with a simple Strawberry Ice Box Cake that uses no actual heating or sharp kitchen tools. We will discuss other flavors, textures, and types of foods the learner enjoys and will decide (with parent approval) what to make each week. Allergies, age-appropriateness and experience levels will all be taken into account as we develop this highly personalized and specialized course. Each class will move at the learner's pace and comfort level. For very young learners we will remain at the no-actual-heating level of food preparation such as little tea sandwiches, salads, dessert pizzas and pinwheels. Older students may, at the parent's discretion, delve into baking, taco making and even holiday candy making! Every lesson will incorporate food-related math and science lessons, as well as building knowledge of cooking tools, terms and techniques.
Learning Goals
Students will learn:
- the names and uses of kitchen tools
- kitchen safety
- kitchen hygiene
- how to measure and convert ingredients as age and experience allow
- basic kitchen science as age and experience allow

Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree from Liberty University
Bachelor's Degree from East Carolina University
As a career educator, I've developed many classes that encouraged and expanded food exploration and understanding. Besides the occasional science or math lesson that used food and cooking as illustration, I've led a "food experience" camp for preschool through 3rd graders that explored different kinds of fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy. Students identified which foods they liked, what the health benefits were and meals they might try that incorporated those ingredients. I've also designed and taught a home economics class for students 8th - 12th grade that taught cooking skills, dietary considerations and basic kitchen science reactions.
