How to Win Friends and Influence People - Key Ideas From the Book

In this 4-session class we explore the key ideas of Dale Carnegie’s classic book, that is still as relevant today as when he wrote it. I facilitate the Q&A in an engaging way, so my students can apply the key ideas in their own lives.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner - Advanced Level
Following the 4-part structure of the book, we will cover the key ideas in a lively and engaging way:
Week 1: Introductions, what the students want to get from the course, “Fundamental Techniques in Handling People”
Week 2: “Six Ways to Make People Like You”
Week 3: “How to Win People to Your Way of Thinking”
Week 4: “Be a Leader; How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment”, summary of key learnings and wrap-up.

Class will be highly interactive although it is up to each student how much they want to engage verbally, or via the chat, depending on their confidence levels. Q&A, case studies, scenarios, 1-to-1 role plays (optional), examples from well known films or stories, and inviting examples from their own experiences will be a key component of the learning.

My aim is always to welcome, engage and build confidence. Students will be enabled to start developing this essential life skill that will serve them well in friendships as well as in class, in the workplace, or building their own business.

You’re never too young to learn how to win friends and influence people.

Students do NOT need to have purchased or read the book. It is easy to obtain online or from a library, if students do want to read it in their own time between our sessions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I first read this book in my teens and I have re-read it frequently. For example, before a job interview, or a big presentation to a client, being interviewed for radio, or managing staff in my architecture business. There are so many golden nuggets, I find something new each time.

I am an architect, serial entrepreneur, triple-certified coach, and parent of teens. I "influence people" every single day in my work and home life. I have to engage a wide range of stakeholders to all pull in the same direction to complete a project, over several years, and often through a lot of problems and potential conflicts of interest.

I thoroughly enjoy this book and developing my skills, I believe it's a key text for personal development and life skills. It boosts confidence, and anyone can learn to improve their communication with Dale Carnegie's recommendations.
