How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell Novel Study

Join me for this multidisciplinary class as we travel to the time of the Vikings and discuss the tale of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, all while learning map reading, Viking history and reading comprehension skills!

Class Experience

This class is based around the stories by Cressida Cowell of an unlikely Viking hero named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. We will sharpen critical thinking skills while discussing the book, complete creative writing assignments about dragons, learn about Viking history, take part in map reading activities and learn strategies for reading comprehension.

WEEK 1: Pre-Reading activities and Building Background Knowledge
-Author study of Cressida Cowell
-Discuss "A Note From Hiccup" and play a pre-reading game
-Take a Virtual tour to a Viking village and complete a KWL chart together

WEEK 2: Chapters 1-3
-Literature circle group with discussion questions; talk about vocabulary
-Introduce the one sentence summary for each chapter
-Character sketch in order to learn about character traits
-Map reading in pairs

WEEK 3: Chapters 4-5
-Discussion of reading and vocabulary in groups
-Use the map outlines to create a new Viking map for the story and use descriptive details and a variety of geographical features to explain your location (optional homework to write a scene that takes place in your location)
     *we will first be discussing the types of geographical features in  Scandanavia

WEEK 4: Chapters 6-8
-Discussion of reading and vocabulary in groups
-Learn about the history of the mythical dragon and create your own using the information learned (colored pencils/watercolors and markers can be used)
-Name your dragon

WEEK 5: Chapters 9-10
-Discussion of reading and vocabulary in breakout groups
-Using the dragon created in the previous week, we will be organizing our thoughts together in order to write a story about how to train our dragons

WEEK 6: Chapters 11-13
-Discussion questions and vocabulary in groups
-Story elements will be taught and analyzed together
-Hiccup trivia game in teams

WEEK 7: Chapters 14-16
-Discussion questions and vocabulary in groups
- Return to the one sentence summary and begin putting together a complete summary of the book
 -Today is Dragonese day! We will learn how to speak to our dragons in dragonese!

WEEK 8: Chapters 17-19
-Discussion questions and vocabulary in groups
-Create a "trailer" for the book using Storyboard

Other Details

Supply List
The students will need a hard copy or ebook version of the first novel in the How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell, "How to Train Your Dragon" and a binder in which to store all the written classwork.  All other materials/handouts will be provided by the teacher.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Special Education with a level 2 certificate as a Wilson Reading System instructor (a multi-sensory reading/phonics program). I taught second grade through eighth grade over the course of fifteen years in the public school system. Currently, I'm a homeschooling mother of three.
