The lesson begins with a quick review of the product, quotient and power rules of exponents. Learners discover what a negative and fractional exponents are and how to simplify expressions with these exponents. Numerous expressions are simplified with step by step explanations for both the negative and fractional cases. Arithmetic and algebraic expressions are used. A set of increasingly difficult problems are worked together. When working on simplifying expressions, learners are encouraged to share their steps and solutions with the class, but not required. The lesson ends with a fun true-false activity to assess understanding. The lesson will include slides for visual support and discussions. Learners should be familiar with algebraic expressions, exponents and the product, quotient and power rules of exponents. This course could be used to review exponents.
