US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
This hands-on, interactive science class gives students in GRADES 4-6 a foundation in the basics of physics. Through experiments, engaging books, and fascinating, interactive science videos, students discover the way the world works around them. The class follows the R.E.A.L Science Odyssey curriculum, which incorporates math, the scientific process, and science topics at age-appropriate levels. Students create scientific models, compare results, form questions, and interpret data, just like REAL scientists! This class may be taken as a stand-alone class, but it is also designed to be part of a full-year 36-week science curriculum for grades 4-6. This class is PART 3 of 4. PART 1: Intro to Physics PART 2: The Physics of Rube Goldberg PART 3 (THIS CLASS): Invisible Forces PART 4: Electricity & Quantum Physics ****************************** STRUCTURE OF CLASS ****************************** Each class is 45 minutes in length and consists of a variety of activities, depending on the topic being studied. Learning activities in this class include, experiments, discussions, readings and engaging videos. Students are expected to come to class with their science journal and materials ready to go. (See materials list) ***************** WINTER 2024 ***************** WEEK 1: INVISIBLE AIR How do we know air is really there? Activities: Weighing Air; Spinning Air WEEK 2: AIR PRESSURE & DRAG What are some properties of air? Activities: Air Lab; Dropping is a Drag WEEK 3: LIFT How do planes fly? Activities: Bernoulli's Effect; Paper Airplane Testing WEEK 4: INVISIBLE WAVES What is sound? Activities: Seeing sound; Cup phone WEEK 5: SOUND & AIR What would happen if you screamed in outer space? What makes sounds different? Activities: "Measuring" sound waves WEEK 6: SOUND & AMPLIFICATION How does sound change? Activities: Making sound visible WEEK 7: INVISIBLE MAGNETISM How do magnets work? Activities: Searching for poles; Tracking Attraction WEEK 8: MAGNET POLES Where are the poles on a magnet? Activities: Making a compass; Finding the North Pole WEEK 9: MAGNET WRAP UP Activities: How could you "unlock" a door with a magnet?
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class, students will have an understanding of
-Air and Air pressure
-Lift needed for flight
-Sound waves
-Magnetic forces and poles

Supply List
Students will need a copy of the REAL SCIENCE ODYSSEY PHYSICS student pages. Students will use this for all four parts in the series. They should place the pages in a 3-ring binder for easy access during class. If you have already purchased this for Part 1 or 2, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO PURCHASE IT AGAIN. Student Pages: https://www.pandiapress.com/product/real-science-odyssey-physics-level-one-student-pages/ eBook- $24 Print Book- $35 You will receive a detailed supply list upon enrollment. Please look over the list as soon as you get it, so you have time to order any necessary items before the start of class. Generally, the supplies are common, household objects. There are a few items you may need to purchase or find, including: -Bar Magnets, available on HomeScience Tools for about $10: https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/bar-magnets-3-alnico-i-2-pack/ -Ring Magnet, available on HomeScience Tools for about $8: https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/ring-magnet-4-5-inch-od/ -Horshoe Magnet, availble on HomeScience Tools for about $7: https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/ring-magnet-4-5-inch-od/ -Balloons -Hair Dryer
