US Grade 3 - 6
The world around us is filled with hidden technology. It is easy to go though daily life and never notice how much time and knowledge went into developing the things we take for granted. This class focuses on opening kids’ eyes to the many feats of engineering that surround them. Class topics will range from complex things like internal combustion engines, electricity, and the internet. All the way to what we normally think of as simple; walls, clothes, and pencils. I will be providing plenty of real-world examples of what we are discussing, and will do my best to come up with activities for each topic that kids can do at home. As with most of my classes, I will mostly ask questions about and guide students to figuring out the answers on their own. This way, students will build their ability to figure things out independently. This works really well with physics as most phenomenon follow similar patterns. An understanding of basic physical forces, conservation of energy, and arithmetic are helpful to being able to participate in class. We will not be discussing fundamentals of physics, but instead focusing on their applications. (for physics fundamentals, please see my class "Physics Concepts for Kids". We won't need to memorize formulas or do much math either, but being able to understand compounding forces and doing basic calculations will be helpful. If we haven’t chosen one in class, I will post a topic/choice of topics each week so that students have time to think about what we'll be discussing and gather any necessary materials. I may include some videos in these posts. I will also be talking about each thing in as kid-friendly terms as possible to avoid confusion over jargon. I will also try to make it so if a student misses a session they will not be out-of-place in the next class.
Learning Goals
This class focuses on cultivating curiosity and identifying patterns.
Students will gain the skills to analyze objects in the world around them and predict how they function.

Supply List
If we plan to do a hands on project, I will send a list for any necessary supplies before class at the beginning of the week (unfortunately if I post more in advance any new students will not be able to see the materials). Materials will typically be household items and should not require much effort to prepare.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
I specialize in Early Childhood Development, and enjoy teaching a variety of science and art based subjects ranging from physics concepts to creative LEGO design and building. I believe kids learn the best through critical thinking and using foundational concepts and patterns to answer their own questions and figure out the world around them.
