8 live meetings
6 in-class hoursHomework
The two science experiments will require the kids writing their observations and completing a lab report. The lab reports will be uploaded to the classroom so that it can be printed for class. Also, the kids will be creating a biome project after meeting 7 outside of class. They will share their projects with the class in meeting 8.Grading
A certificate of completion will be uploaded to the classroom after the last day of class.Class Experience
US Grade 5
The interaction of living things is all around us! We see it everyday whenever we see animals and plants in different settings. We are also a part of this interaction. In this four week class, we will meet two times a week to learn about ecosystems, plants and their needs for survival, predators and prey, and the temperate deciduous forest biome. Since I have been a citizen scientist with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the kids will learn about different plants and animals in the park, as well as the temperate deciduous forest biome because this national park is located in this biome. I think learning about different science concepts is a great way to get kids interested in science because science plays a big part in our world. I use visual graphics such as slideshows and videos in class so that the kids can see the concepts we are discussing. I also encourage questions and sharing any knowledge that the kids may have about the science concepts because that's how we learn. We will be doing activities so that the kids can learn about the science concepts in different ways. The kids will also be making an interactive notebook so they will need either a 3 ring binder with notebook paper, a two pocket folder with prongs, or a one-subject spiral bound notebook. I will upload the PDFs of the interactive notebook pages to the classroom so that they can be printed for class. We will do two science labs: one that tests how soil affects plant growth and one that shows how decomposers work. On the days that we do science labs, the kids will follow along with me as we do the activity. The supplies are listed in a PDF that I will post in the classroom. If you have any questions about the class or the supplies, please send me a message.
