Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
This is a great class for early learners! We will focus on basic literacy and math concepts that will lay the foundation for future success in these areas!

We will cover such topics as letter sounds, digraphs (ch, sh, and th), -ing, -ck, -ll, and -y word ending, and proper handwriting techniques. We will introduce over 80 sight words learned in the context of fun kid-friendly poems, make a frog puppet, and earn stars on our pass off charts! We will also learn strategies for decoding tricky words, what nouns and verbs are, and how to use the -s and -ed endings to change their meaning.

In math, we will focus on building number sense by looking at multiple number models and learn different ways of thinking about numbers from 0-20. We will also look at adding and subtracting those numbers, and going on to count to 100 while learning about place value to the hundreds position. We will use games and lots of hands on practice to master these foundational skills!

This class is taught every day for 50 minutes. Homework is given M-TH nights and skill mastery is assessed on Fridays.

I use a variety of teaching strategies such as manipulatives, dry-erase boards, annotation, workbook pages, and more. I also use several of the books I have written on letters, numbers, handwriting, and sight words.

Learners will interact with me on screen during class and posts in the classroom are welcome!
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to identify and name and sound of each letter of the alphabet as well as the digraphs ch, sh, and th. They will also be able to form each letter correctly and use phonics to spell words.
Learners will be able to read up to 80 sight words, decode phonetic text, answer comprehension questions, learn new vocabulary, and write in complete sentences.
