Campfire style stories with lots of historic details, tension builders, and suspense. Truth can be stranger and spookier than fiction. This class is often scary. This is not a class that is a good fit for all students. Please check the the classroom and this page for week by week class information. Each week we will discuss a mystery or interesting story from history. Sometimes the stories may be creepy and other stories may be just unusual. Students will be asked what they think happened and when applicable infer what may happen next. Why were two lost children found wandering? Why did they speak another language than the locals? More surprising, why were the children GREEN? We will see pictures, watch video clips, look at evidence, and discuss theories. Please read Parental Guidance below for more information on the content of this class. I spend between 10-16 hours each week working on this class and doing the research for it. Each week we will explore a new topic. This class is not a good fit for all students. We will cover scary stories, review events and times where murder and death happened (history is filled with death). We may see skeletons or other creepy images. Scare Factor: Green little or no scare for most students. Yellow moderate, some students may be more scared or upset than others. Red: Naturally scary or upsetting topic with most students having feelings of suspense and a scare factor. If the range is Green-Red it means that all students react differently to topics and some will have no negative reaction and some will be more upset. Please send a message if you are unsure of the content or a quick google search of the topic should give you an indication of what to expect. Fall Schedule 2023 As always, if a student or parent is uncomfortable with a topic you may skip that week for a full refund so long as I am notified in advance. I will post this in the classroom. You can opt into and out of this class at any time. I will not be offended if this class doesn't wind up a good fit for your child. This class is purposely crafted to build and sustain suspense and some kids thrive in this class and love it and others do not. Even green classes are crafted for suspense when possible. If you are looking for an intensive history class this class is likely not for you.
Learning Goals
Students will try to solve some of histories biggest mysteries all while learning about different time periods, customs, and places.
Students will learn about interesting times, places, and events and use their deductive reasoning to come share conclusions. I generally use a Socratic method of questioning and often do not provide "answers." This class helps students develop their critical thinking skills and skepticism skills.

Parental Guidance
Some topics may be sensitive, for instance since these stories are about historical mysteries most of the people featured have died, sometimes violently, mysteriously, or with lots of gore. Some stories are simple mysteries, while others are outright spooky or scary.
This class is a good fit for thrill seekers or kids who want history classes that tell a story and have an adventure feel to them. Students who don't like a lot of talking or interaction will not enjoy this class. Students who are shy may struggle. This class is very talkative, interactive, silly, and students connect with each other. We also watch a lot of videos that have been edited and selected carefully for the topic.
. If you let me know in advance (by at least a day) that your child will not be attending due to the scare factor I will refund your cost that week. You can check a class rating in the description section of the page.
I will post a Green for Not scary for most learners with the topic, Yellow for moderate scare, and Red for Super Scary or more sensitive topic. Of course, some individuals find things more or less scary than others do so this is just a guideline. You know your child best.
I will refund for classes that a child attends but leaves early due to not being ok with the content.
I will discuss murder as needed or deaths if they are pertinent to the lesson or an integral part of the topic. For instance, you can't discuss the deaths of the Romanov family without discussing their execution. It is hard to teach a class about war without talk of fighting, violence, and death.
I also know that this is not a class for every student, I have a lot of fun and whimsical classes, and I suspect there are many of those classes to find. This class is specifically designed with thrill seeking history fans in mind. This class is for them!
I used to have this class starting at 7 years old but it became apparent pretty quickly that not all 7 year olds were a good match for the class so I changed it. Some kids will not be scared at all by a red level class and others may be horrified by what I thought was a green level class. This is very subjective. Every week I will post the following week's topic so you can make educated decisions about whether you think the content might be too scary for your child. I trust parents to know their children the best and judge for themselves. So if you believe this is a good fit for your child but they are outside the age range you may enroll them.. If it ends up not being a good fit you can unenroll at any time. You also can opt to "skip" a week that will not be a good fit and I can just refund you.
Our final day of the year we have a game day which reinforces the fun and friendship we have developed through the year. This is a fun but non-academic day.

This class uses a lot of video clips to help with story telling. It takes me between 10-16 hours to research each class, watch all the videos and then find what I'm going to utilize for class. This is a lot more work than when I simply share a story from history which generally takes an hour or two to craft. If you do not want your child watching videos this is NOT a good class for you.

About Our Teachers:
Nicole Pauling, M. Ed.
I specialize in fun and sometimes scary history. I love to tell a good story. I love to create a tale in such a way that you are drawn in and you don't necessarily realize that you are sitting in a classroom. I also love to laugh. I love to be creative and design opportunities for students to connect to other students. I am a foster parent, mom, serial entrepreneur, artist, case worker, author, mom, and teacher. I love history and all things related to history topics. I have passed my history praxis.
Educationally, I have degrees in Sociology, Psychology, philosophy, and criminal justice and I recently completed my Master's in Education. I have run a domestic violence shelter, worked on mental health in a hospital, and did drop out prevention. I worked in the "field" for over a decade before going into business for myself.
A lot of my work with children has involved teaching them how to evaluate, plan, and use logic to understand the world, events, and consequences. Critical thinking is a skill that I encourage and like to build into my classes as well as flexible thinking as both are essential life skills.
Les Pauling, MA: I love helping students learn how to connect with one another and live their best lives.
I have lived an adventurous life. I love to kayak, scuba dive, wreck dive, white water raft, and really do anything that just brings joy and fun into life. I balloon twist as a side gig, moonlight at festivals as "The Bad Advice Fairy," and generally think I'm funny.
I am a counselor by trade with a Master's Degree in Community Counseling and High School Guidance counseling and a bachelor's in psychology. I got my initial training as a guidance counselor and then went into 1:1 therapeutic work in schools and homes. I also have over a decade working with youth who have intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Some things I love to do are teach students logical thinking, decision making, goal setting, and life skills.
Kristi Myers:
Above all, I am a mom. I absolutely love my daughter, who is a musician, writer and artist. It has been my greatest joy to raise her and educate her. I have always loved working with kids, and I am the "cool aunt" in my family. I have tutored college students for 12 years across many subjects, and I am used to learning new material quickly and finding creative ways to teach it to students of all ages. Kids bring me immense joy, and watching them learn and have fun is the greatest feeling. I teach intuitively and meet students where they are. I am guided by the training I received in graduate school. I have a Master of Arts in Education with an additional 15 graduate credits in child and adolescent development. In my free time, I am a musician and artist and aspiring writer. I love to spend hours online learning random things, just for fun. I also love my cats.
Elizabeth Sanchez:
I like to go by Liz or Miss Liz. I'm a teacher, an actress, and an entrepreneur. I love history and the crazier the story the better I like it. I love to tell a good story and to really bring history to life through interaction. Hello, young historians! I'm Ms. Liz, a mystery lover and sleuth enthusiast! I’m so excited to share my fascination with history and the darker side of storytelling. Drawing from my studies in sociology and film, I aim to delve into the depths of the past, unraveling the mysteries of the human mind and exploring its impact on society. Merging my passion for people and up beat personality, my teaching style is approachable, interactive, and fun! Join me as we journey through the shadows of history and uncover its hidden truths together!
LLoren Zeigler:
While my teaching experience has predominantly been in traditional classroom settings, my background in film and television production has equipped me with valuable skills for seamless adaptation to online instruction. In my classes, students consistently emerge feeling empowered to inquire, engage in meaningful discourse with peers, and critically examine societal conventions. My ultimate aspiration is for students to depart with the capacity not only to absorb knowledge but also to effectively impart it to others.
In my approach to online teaching, I place a strong emphasis on merging education with cultural relevance. Drawing from my background in acting and performance, I bring a dynamic energy to the virtual classroom. I firmly believe that learning extends far beyond the confines of traditional settings. My objective is to create an interactive learning environment where robust discussions thrive and critical thinking skills are honed. Through the strategic integration of engaging content delivery methods, I aim to address the individual learning needs of each student, even in the absence of external support systems.
Areas I love to teach: Drama/ Theater, Queer and Gender Theory, Film Making, Clubs, Social Studies, Creative Writing, Screenwriting, Music History, World History, African American Studies
Anna Scanlon:
I am a reader, writer, filmmaker, and lover of history! I teach in an interactive manner that allows you to learn hands on: even in a virtual environment. I love to teach using videos and puzzles/activities. I feel this is the best way to keep students engaged and learn (while not realizing they’re learning). I love making each class something new and exciting for each individual student I work with.
I love reading and book collecting (I own 568 as of this moment). I’m also a fiction writer and will be starting my masters in creative writing soon! I love cooking and baking and feeding the things I make to my loved ones. When I find time to I also like to paint (specifically watercolor, more specifically watercolor of plants and landscapes). This last one may seem weird, but I love organizing things and making spreadsheets of my life.
Katrina Pauling(Minty):
I live a lot of my life at the ice rink and playing video games. I am a twitch streamer, a college student specializing in engineering and mathematics, and I have been making balloon animals, face painting, and professionally entertaining since I was 7.
I also am a trained and certified youth chaplain and peer mentor. I was one of 25 youth in the United States to be chosen as a Luminary Award winner. I spoke at General Assembly in 2019 and wrote the Chalice lighting and spoke before a crowd of almost 5000. I volunteered for years with Special Olympics and Special needs hockey. I enjoy writing, digital art, drawing, puzzles, and engineering and electrical systems. I have multiple certifications in welding and mechatronics including Siemens I certification.
I will be teaching animal classes, Minecraft, Anime, and art as well as some basic engineering classes on Outschool.
Talon Pauling:
I've been unofficially helping create all the games and content for our FNAF classes for over 3 years. I am a recent graduate from a technical school with a focus in programming and internet technology. I love gaming including Five Nights at Freddy's, Terraria, and more. I'm extremely versed in the lore and look forward in adding more gaming content to the Academy of Wonder. I am also the Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Homeschool Association.
