Extra! Extra! Learn All About It! In this multi-day course, we will explore the historical figures brought to life in the awarding winning play, “Hamilton.” Through this interactive, musical explosion, we will learn about the United States and its history while exploring through the lives of the players in Hamilton. We will use lyrics to compare the truth of their lives as America was born! Each week, we will cover one historical figure, investigate who they were, what they believed in, what they wanted, and how their lives and goals ended up. We work through fun and interactive presentation with music and lyrics from the play and discussion to discover the truth and reality behind these famous people! Day One: Alexander Hamilton Day Two: Thomas Jefferson Day Three: George Washington Day Four: Aaron Burr Day Five: General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Day Six: King George III Day Seven: The Schuyler Sisters, Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Day Eight: Hercules Mulligan and the Secret Spies of the Revolution In class, we will work together to unfold who these people were, explore their effects on the development of the United States and where their lives ended up. We will also work to compare their historical lives to the portrayal of them in the musical – what was similar? What was different? And what do you think should have been different in their portrayal? Each class will be an engaging historical discussion that evaluates some key historical players who were “in the room” creating, changing, or fighting against the creation and success of the newly formed United States of America. Content will be explored through active, student-led collaborative discussions, interactive slides, and more! Please be advised that this is a history class, and there are topics that will be taught/discussed that are of a sensitive nature: slavery, war, sectional violence, etc. So, let’s get ready to be “in the room," too!

Please note that there are some sensitive topics that will be addressed throughout the course including but not limited to: genocide, slavery, and sectional violence. I have been challenging and elevating students for over 10 years to delve deeply into the issues of our past and wrestle with the realities of our present and future. Each conversation will be open and honest but guided with the necessary care for students of this age. I believe it is our job as educators to not teach children what to think- but how to think and allow them to unearth the truths that are often hidden within the words of pages.
