History Herald: Travel to Valhalla- The Life and Culture of the Vikings

In this multi-day course, students will travel back to learn about the culture, religion, practices, and life of the Vikings!

Over this 5-day course, students will focus on the history of the Vikings- Who they were, what they did, what they believed, and what did they leave behind.
Day 1 – We will learn who the Vikings are, where they are from, what they did, and various culture achievements like the Viking alphabet. We will learn about foods they ate and celebrations they had. 
Day 2- We will learn about the trading and raiding of the Vikings. Where did they go, how did they do it, what were they looking for, and who went on the trips. We will also look at the ships they made and what was so special about them. 
Day 3- We will learn about the religions of the Vikings by exploring the gods and myths of their culture. We will look into their belief of the afterlife, Valhalla. We will also learn about Odin, Thor, Loki, and more!
Day 4- We will explore shieldmaidens- famous, powerful women who fought alongside the men. We will learn about who they were, the stories around them, and where they fought. We will also learn about some famous shieldmaidens – Lagertha and Freydis Eiriksdottir.
Day 5 – We will learn about some other famous Vikings and their adventures – Lief Erikson, Bjorn Ironside, Ragnar Lodbrok, Eric the Red, Rollo of Normandy, plus more!

Each class, students will be provided with a handout to be used to take notes if they desire. In class, we will have an engaging presentation that is fueled with class discussion and collaboration. We will have some activities on various days to help engage with the content.

Parental Guidance
Students will explore the past of the Vikings which will include some violence, but all content will be kept age appropriate.

My undergraduate is in history, focusing on United States and European integration, past cultures, and empire. My first master's degree is in education with a focus on English/Language Arts and History. My second master's degree is in history with a focus on world empires and United States/Europe during the premodern era and modern era. I am currently pursuing my PhD in history focusing on immigration and relations with indigenous peoples and cultures. 
I have taught Ancient Civilizations in World History classes as well as classes on the history of Africa, Asia, and Australia, Ancient and Medieval Europe, and Early American history. I have taken and taught classes on world religions and practices starting with the ancient traditions of prehistoric cultures through modern day transitions of religions such as druidism. I have also taught about episodes of religious hysteria such as the Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials. I also teach classes on the myths and legends that have defined these cultures. This extensive background will be utilized to create a well-rounded and thorough explanation of the topic.
