History Book Club I
Class experience
US Grade 4 - 6
This class is aimed at home schooled learners and enthusiastic readers interested in reading and discussing high quality youth history books. We will learn stories in American History covering approximately 50 pages each time. To expand upon some of these stories, there will be some slides, video, and museum websites used. A Kahoot will be given when we reach the end of each book. Some time will be taken in the first to outline the story before diving in to the material. There will be a...
This class will allow the learner to identify their own topics of interest while reading and bring these themes to class meetings. It is not a reading instruction class, so the learner will not be corrected much while reading aloud. If the learner is not a confident reader, the instructor will likely not call on that person to read to avoid embarrassment or the class moving too slowly. In this type of class, there is not time to read every word of the book together, so we will read excerpts that capture the plot and themes, and some slides, video and online sites would be used to explore the subjects further.
I have a master's degree in history from Pepperdine University and have taught history on Outschool, at UCLA Extension, and at Marymount California University. Additionally, I have written a history book and presented my master's thesis topic at a professional conference in La Jolla, CA. In the course of teaching, I have covered many sensitive topics, and I do so in a non-salacious but honest manner. With young learners I strive to present difficult subjects in a way they can understand without undue distress.
Homework Offered
The learner should plan to read or listen to audio covering 30-50 pages in the book for each class meeting. In a typical youth history book, this would be about three chapters of material. We will take time to introduce each book and why the subject is important before diving into the reading.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

1 file available upon enrollmentThe student should plan to obtain the book being read and discuss via Libby or the Overdrive App from a public library. If that is not possible, I would suggested buying used paperbacks on Amazon or other site because they can be obtained inexpensively. Many are also available as audiobooks and nearly all as ebooks.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Many of the books involve death, and the theme of murder appears in the assassinations of the presidents. This is fairly typical in the study of history, but it could be a concern for a parent. There is a "true crime" element to several of these books as well. The assassination relics from the Lincoln Assassination are held in museum, and we could possibly view those in an online gallery, for example. Overly sensitive learners may not be a good fit for some of these books, but this class will be have a separate section for each book, so the learner could enroll and not re-enroll if the material was not to his or her liking.
Each of these books will comprise one section of this class. You should obtain the material for the section or sections that you intend to take: Allen, Thomas B., and Cheryl Harness.
