Class Experience

This is a continuation of the Recorder Karate (RK) Program. During this class period we will learn the final three songs of the program. RK follows a belt system, in which learners will be tested on the accuracy of the songs learned. There are nine belts in the program, and the songs get more challenging the higher the belts are. This is a high interaction course, as learners will need to pass their belts to advance. It is recommended that the learners begin with RK Level Two before attempting this course. We will have two lessons per week: the first day will be to learn the song and begin testing for belts, while the second day will be to solely work on testing. Students will officially complete the RK Program at the end of this course.

Week 1: Red Belt (Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star), learning how to play F#.
Week 2: Brown Belt (Amazing Grace).
Week 3: Black Belt (Ode to Joy).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings! Welcome to Mr. Collins' Classroom! I am Freddie Collins, and I have been a musician in some capacity for over 15 years. I am here to teach you the basics in Soprano Recorder, Ukulele and Guitar. My most favorite instrument to use is the Recorder, and I will be offering my version of the Recorder Karate (RK) Program.

A little more info about me: prior to going to college, I was a member of a Nationally-recognized Character Education Assembly Team that performed all over the US. My time on the road earned me a scholarship to college, where I earned a degree in Music with a concentration on Songwriting. Following college, I've had the honor of being a General Music Teacher since 2016, where I've successfully taught my students how to become masters of the RK Program, as well as teaching them ukulele and the basics in Guitar.

When it comes to my classroom environment, I believe that class should be fun at all times. Yes, we will be learning and building new skills each time we meet, but we are NOT here to tear each other down in the process. We all come from different backgrounds to learn about one of the greatest and most beautiful methods of communication known to man--music. So, when we are together, we will have a blast while learning, no excuses. I am here to help you get to the next level, but I will go at YOUR speed. If additional help is needed, we can set that up. Just know that you WILL grow as a member of my classroom.

And finally, one more cool thing about me: while in college, I was a part of a band that did a choral musical number as a parody of a viral news interview. Immediately after the performance, we went viral. I almost backed out of the performance during our audition stage, but I was convinced to stay with it. I'm so glad that I did.

Whether you are learning an instrument as a hobby or because you want to become a professional musician, I am honored to be a long for the journey! Welcome to Mr. Collins' Classroom!
