Class Experience

Required pre-requisite: Hindi for Tots! (1A)-this is required in order to ensure learners will be comfortable in the class and give them a chance to ease in to Hindi before committing to the longer course. Learners will also be introduced to two Hindi vowels ( अ and आ) and related vocabulary. Drop outs from the longer course do affect the class environment as classes are kept purposefully small. Please keep this in mind.

In this class, young learners will be gently introduced to Hindi through verbal interaction, song, finger play, pictures, and props.
Learners will be encouraged to interact not only with the instructor but also their fellow classmates during class to not only practice Hindi but also socialization skills. Over the course of 12 weeks students will become more familiar with basic introductory phrases, colors, vowel related vocabulary (mainly food and animals) through the varied play. We will also be reading a book together "Shubh Raatri Dost/ Good Night Friend" by Nidhi Chanani which all learners will be required to purchase as part of this class.

The class will be structured as follows:

Week 1: Review of 1A materials/topics, 1 new vowel and related vocabulary introduction, and continued practice of greeting and counting songs
Week 2: Review of week 1 and 1 new vowel and related vocabulary introduction, and continued practice of greeting and counting songs
Week 3: Review of weeks 1-2 and introduction & practice of colors
Weeks 4-6: Weekly introduction of 1 new vowel, introduction & practice of numbers 6-10, and continued practice of color and counting songs/activities.
Week 7: Review of weeks 4-6, begin reading book, continued practice of color and counting songs/activities, change up and practice of greeting song.
Weeks 8-11: Weekly introduction of 1 new vowel, continued practice of greeting, color and counting songs/activities, and continue reading book.
Week 12: Review of weeks 8-11, continued practice of greeting, color and counting songs/activities, and continue reading book.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I began studying Hindi in 2007 with a private tutor and continued to study Hindi at Indiana University as part of my India Studies degree. I have spent approximately 10 months in India at various times and places living with locals and honing my language skills. I tutored Hindi in 2019 and have been teaching Hindi at the TN Language Center since January 2020. In addition, I am a Kathak dance student and have been learning Kathak at Upasana Performing Arts Center, Nashville, TN over the past 11 years. I have also been a part of my dance school’s South Asian community since I began dancing Kathak and therefore have been able to gain additional cultural and historical comprehension as regards both Hindi/Urdu and South Asia.

I have worked in Montessori classrooms as well as more traditional classrooms working with young children as well as teens. I bring my TEFL training as well as my experience teaching English as a foreign language to all my language classes. Additionally, having been a foreign language student myself I know the challenges that many learners face in acquiring a new language and seek to make new concepts-grammar, vocab, phonics-as accessible and as comprehensible as possible through various means-media, powerpoint, activities, drills-by whatever means possible! I love learning new things everyday and hope that my classes would pass along not only knowledge but the attitude that knowledge and learning are valuable and exciting!
