US Grade 7 - 10
In this five-week course on academic writing, incoming high school students will receive a comprehensive overview of essential writing skills necessary for success in high school. This course is designed to build confidence and competence in writing, equipping students with the tools they need to excel in their academic writing assignments. Students will learn how to -- 💠 craft a strong thesis statement 💠 structure a multi-paragraph essay including an introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion, and smooth transitions 💠 cite textual evidence to support their claims through paraphrasing and embedding quotations 💠 apply critical analysis to elaborate on stated claims in their body paragraphs 💠 use MLA formatting to cite their sources and format their work The course is structured to provide a mix of instruction, practice, and interaction. Each session will focus on a specific or research writing skill and will include a combination of lectures, interactive activities, and class discussion. Students will have ample opportunities to interact with me and their peers throughout the course. Students will also be able to receive feedback on their written work during the course by sharing their writing with me through Outschool messenger.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid foundation in academic writing, equipped with the skills and confidence needed to feel confident as they enter high school English class!

The Thesis Statement
Students will learn the importance of the thesis statement as the driving force of their essay and how to write a clear and concise thesis statement.

Lesson 2:
Structuring a Multi-Paragraph Essay
Students will learn the major components of a multi-paragraph essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion) and how each paragraph should be structured--including logical transitions to allow for a smooth flow from one paragraph to the next.

Lesson 3:
Embedding Textual Evidence
Students will learn how to properly cite textual evidence with regard to both paraphrasing and integrating quotations. Students will learn how to smoothly integrate quotations into to the structure of their sentences in a way that maintains the flow of the writing.

Lesson 4:
Explanations and Elaborations
Students will learn how to extend beyond a summary of the text or a mere restatement of the quotations and provide in depth analysis through thoughtful explanations and elaborations on the significance of their stated point.
