Assessment
All students will be given a formative assessment to see gauge their reading ability and skill. This will require students to read a list of words or short passage aloud and to read silently and answer comprehension questions. The nature of this test is 1-on-1 and will be in a breakout room with the teacher. The students not in the breakout room will be working on a reading project or silent reading assessment. At the mid-point and end of our lesson series, we will review as a group, and at the end of our lesson series, all students will be assessed with tools similar to the formative assessment.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 11
This class is an evidence & research based reading intervention with explicitly taught reading and decoding skills for struggling readers. We start with the basics and build our knowledge base as each week progresses.

Student will practice vowel pairs, blends, prefixes, suffixes, and root word parts to build reading and decoding skills that can be generalize to similar words. With the knowledge of word part meanings, students are more comfortable determining the meaning of words with and without context.

Each series of lessons culminates in a shared reading and vocabulary building project.
Learning Goals
At the end of the 3 week lesson series, students will be able to quickly identify the vowel pairs and blends taught, and read them within prefixes, suffixes, and word roots.

Students will also have an understanding of the meaning of the learned prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
