Class Experience

In this course, students will learn to understand and communicate in Italian in a range of everyday situations.
Students will develop basic skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Italian, learn vocabulary, expressions, and how to talk about everyday and familiar topics. During the course, students will also learn about Italian culture and develop the study skills needed to learn a language.

Session I Summary:
Week 1: Introduction to the Italian Language. Discuss what makes Italian an easy language to learn and how we can speed up our learning.
We will learn the sound of the alphabet and vowels in Italian, as well as some practical vocabulary words.

Week 2: Introduction to "Le parole gentili": how to use words of politeness. We will learn how to greet others and present ourselves.

Week 3: Introduction to composite and complex sounds (gli, sce-sci, sche-schi) and how to read them within a word.

Week 4: The numbers 1 -20. Counting by 10's up to 100. The parts of the body.

Week 5: The Days of the Week. How to write the date. Introduction to small sentences.

Week 6: The months of the year. Vocabulary regarding the weather. Review.

I don't assign homework, but I encourage doing something throughout the week, such as picking out an everyday object and then learning its name in Italian or choosing a favorite recipe we can translate while practicing vocabulary during the lesson.
I encourage students to stay organized with the use of notebooks and a folder to keep worksheets organized.
I do informal assessments as we go to evaluate learning progress.
30 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
