High School Essay Workshops - Basics and Advancing to the Next Level

Students will learn the basics of essay, as well as work on advanced skills. Students may bring in essays they are working on for questions. As a 6-12 Certified ELA Teacher with 8 years of teaching high school, I provide essay essentials.

This ongoing workshop will be working on essay skills for high schoolers. Each week we will cover a different aspect of writing, but students are encouraged to come with their specific questions and assignments, so we can address those.  Working with students essays will be a portion of our work together, as well.

Session topics will rotate through the below topics, and students can pop in at any time. These do not need to be done sequentially. Students can drop into any session that meets their needs. Below are the four weeks of the drop-in sessions. Skills can be built on for those continuing to attend each session or for those just dropping in for one or two sessions, they can jump in with the topic of that day. 
Week 1 (Week of July 28th)-How Do I Start Essays?: Brainstorming, Outlining, and Understanding the Different Types of Essays and Ongoing Essay Questions and Practice
Week 2 (Week of August 4th) -  How Do I Organize Essay?: Introductory Paragraphs (Hook, Thesis, Plan) and Introductory and Concluding Sentences and Ongoing Essay Questions and Practice
Week 3 (Week of August 11th) -   How and Why Do I Incorporate Details in Essays?: Using Details, Support for Topic and Ongoing Essay Questions and Practice
Week 4 (Week of August 18th) -  How Do I Fine-Tune My Essay?: Transitions, Using a Diverse Sentence Structure, and Revising and Ongoing Essay Questions and Practice
Learning Goals
Students will be able to brainstorm, outline an essay, understand and execute the different parts of an essay, give details and support for their topic, work on the details of writing: sentence structure, transitions, and introductory and concluding sentences, and revise.

Supply List
Students are encouraged to bring something to write on (notebook/computer), and any essays they need assistance with.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
