High School English: A Study in Dystopian Short Stories

In this 9-week high school ELA course, students will meet once a week to read and discuss dystopian short stories, analyze themes, and write THREE different types of academic essays.

I will be reviewing each Formal Essay (with a rubric) one time to try to help guide each learner to creating his or her best writing. *Please note, grades (letter/percentage) are not issued for this course. **Due dates are assigned. Work must be submitted on or before the due date to receive feedback.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this nine-week-long course, students will focus on short story readings and discussion and formal essay writing.  Each week the class will consist of partial lecture to explain the writing tasks and partial discussion of weekly short story readings.  

What This Course Includes:
-An overview of Dystopian Literature and its themes
-3 Dystopian Short Stories
-4 Different Formal Essays 
-Getting Teacher Feedback on Your Writing

For Homework (about 1 - 2 hours, depending on the student)
-Either reading the week's short story, or writing the week's essay (each week we will rotate between reading/writing)

Week 1:  Introduction to Dystopian Literature
Week 2:  Discussion of Bruce Coville's "Old Glory"
Week 3:  Response to Literature Essay
Week 4:  Writing Feedback 
Week 5:  Discussion of Kurt Vonnegut Jr's "Harrison Bergeron"
Week 6:  Comparison Essay
Week 7:  Writing Feedback 
Week 8:  Discussion of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"
Week 9: Literary Analysis Essay

**DUE DATES are assigned for this course.
Along with teaching classes and providing feedback, teachers have additional classes they may teach and other responsibilities which require scheduling for completing the feedback. This is why due dates are assigned to be considerate of teacher’s time and also to ensure that the workload isn’t overlapping for learners.  Feedback for student essays will be provided within a week of the due date.

Learning Goals

Students should come away from this class with an understanding of the themes of dystopian literature, as well as knowledge of three different types of essays:  Response to Literature, Comparison, and Literary Analysis.

Parental Guidance
The Class PowerPoint, including examples and graphic organizer templates, will be uploaded for each session. Students will need a writing program or application to submit assignments (.doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt, GoogleDocs, etc) or the assignments may be typed directly in the chatbox options. Only typed essays will be accepted. No handwritten essays. Images will not receive feedback (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, etc).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS
On Outschool, each class has a different refund policy. Please make note of the specific Refund policy for that class (stated at the bottom of the pop-up window after you click "Enroll.")  If you realize you cannot attend a class that has not yet met, please contact me and I can try to transfer the learner to another section of the same class. Transfer requests within 48 hours of the start of class sometimes are not possible. If you realize you have missed a class that has already passed, a recording of the class will be made available upon request. 

LOW ENROLLMENT
In the case that a class does not meet the minimum enrollment, it may be cancelled and your enrollment fee returned to you. For one-time classes, I will make sure to reach out to you at least 24 hours in advance. For multi-day classes, I will make sure to communicate with you at least one week in advance if the class will be cancelled.
