1-2 hours per week. Students will be assigned weekly practice assignments. Assignments are normally offered through Google Slides or Google Forms. Students who submit their assignments can typically expect to receive teacher feedback within three business days. Assignments are required for students who wish to receive a letter grade from me at the end of the course.Assessment
At the end of each unit, student progress is assessed through a unit quiz which is completed using Google Forms. The quiz is typically a combination of multiple choice and written response questions. Since this is a self-paced class, assessments are done as take-home assignments. Students may use their notes, but should not use any other internet resources for their assessments. Assessments are required for students who wish to receive a letter grade from me at the end of the course.Letter Grade
Grades are available by default for students who submit all weekly practice assignments and assessments. Assignments must be submitted by the end of the course.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
In this interactive lecture-based course, high school students will learn about Biology. This is a self paced course (meaning there are no live meetings), and students will receive teacher support through feedback on submitted work during the duration of the 16-week course. In this course, I will utilize Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for high school life science to guide instruction. Here's some information about how the class is structured: Each lesson includes an instructional video (around 10-15 minutes in length), embedded questions to check for student understanding, and a homework assignment. I also include one lab activity and one assessment in each unit. This class will utilize Edpuzzle, an approved online resource that is free for students. This resource will allow me to embed questions along with our weekly lesson video for students to respond to digitally, helping to reinforce learning. Edpuzzle is used to help check for student understanding of the lesson. Students will need to create a free Edpuzzle account using an email address. I will provide students with fill-in-the-blank guided note sheets that can be used with the lesson to help students stay organized. Students are not required to use these, but many students find them helpful. I will provide a review homework assignment to help reinforce concepts covered during the lesson. Students can submit assignments to me for feedback. Students can typically expect to receive feedback from me within three business days. The course follows a 16-week semester format. However, there are actually 18 lessons covered (two bonus lessons!). Below is the course schedule: Lesson 1: DNA Replication Lesson 2: Protein Synthesis Lesson 3: Levels of Organization Lesson 4: Homeotasis QUIZ Lesson 5: Photosynthesis Lesson 6: Cellular Respiration Lesson 7: The Carbon Cycle Lesson 8: Biomass & Energy Pyramids QUIZ Lesson 9: Introduction to Ecosystems Leson 10: Group Behavior Lesson 11: Population Ecology Lesson 12: Human Impact QUIZ Lesson 13: Cellular Division and Differentiation Lesson 14: Chromosomal Inheritance Lesson 15: Genetic Variation Lesson 16: Environmental Gene Expression QUIZ Lesson 17: Natural Selection Lesson 18: Evolution QUIZ If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me!
Learning Goals
Lesson 1 Goal: Students will be able to describe the structure of a DNA molecule.
Lesson 2 Goal: Students will be able to describe the processes involved in protein synthesis.

Learning Needs
Many students benefit from note-taking supports such as visual aids, outlines, and structured note templates. I provide students with fill-in-the-blank guided note sheets to help support note taking skills.
Parental Guidance
This class will use a few third-party tools:
- Edpuzzle: This resource will allow me to embed questions in our weekly lessons for students to respond to digitally, helping to reinforce learning.
- Youtube: I may provide Youtube links to my instructional videos.
- Google Slides: Students will be given practice assignments through Google Slides.
- Google Forms: Students will be given unit assessments through Google Forms. Students do not need a Google account to complete a Google Form.
- Quizlet: This is an optional resource students will be encouraged to use for science vocabulary review.
- PhET: This website provided by University of Colorado Boulder has a variety of virtual lab simulations. Students will be assigned two optional lab activities using the PhET simulations.
Pre-Requisites
It is recommended that students complete a middle school level life science course before completing this course.
