High School Biology Curriculum (16 Week Semester Live Course)
What's included
16 live meetings
12 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be assigned a weekly review assignment. Students can typically expect to receive teacher feedback within about 3 business days. In addition, optional lab activities will be posted periodically. Lab activities will not be graded, but are provided for extra enrichment.Assessment
At the end of each unit, student progress is assessed through a unit quiz which is completed using Google Forms. The quiz is typically a combination of multiple choice and written response questions. Assessments are completed outside of class sessions. Students may use their notes, but should not use any other internet resources for their assessments. Assessments are required for students who wish to receive a letter grade from me at the end of the course.Letter Grade
Grades are available by default for students who submit all weekly practice assignments and assessments. It is expected that students are turning in their assignments on time, by Sunday night each week. Students with excessive late and/or missing assignments will not receive letter grades at the end of the course.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
In this interactive lecture-based course, students will learn about Biology, the study of life. This course utilizes Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for high school life science. Here's a little more information about how the class is structured: I will post student guided note sheets on the Outschool classroom each Sunday evening. Note sheets can be printed prior to class if desired to provide additional support for note taking. While this is a lecture-based course, students will have opportunities to ask questions and engage in discussions. This class will utilize Peardeck, an approved online resource that is free for students. This resource will allow me to embed questions throughout the class for students to respond to digitally, helping to reinforce learning. After each weekly class session, I will provide a review assignment to help students reinforce concepts covered in class. I wll provide regular feedback to students who submit these optional assignments. To be successful in this course, students should have taken a previous middle school level science course. This course is designed to align to the high school level Next Generation Science Standards for life science courses. I plan to cover the following in a 16-week semester format: Unit 1: Structure and Function Week 1: DNA & Protein Synthesis Week 2: Cells, Tissues, Organs & Organ Systems Week 3: Homeostasis Unit 2: Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems Week 4: Photosynthesis Week 5: Cellular Respiration Week 6: Biomass & Trophic Levels Week 7: The Carbon Cycle Unit 3: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems Week 8: Introduction to Ecosystems Week 9: Population Ecology Week 10: Group Behavior in an Ecosystem Week 11: Human Impact on Ecosystems Unit 4: Inheritance & Variation of Traits Week 12: Cellular Division & Differentiation Week 13: Genetic Variation Week 14: Environmental Gene Expression Unit 5: Natural Selection & Evolution Week 15: Natural Selection Week 16: Evidence of Evolution Lab experiences are often an important part of science classes, and I want your learner to be able to have that lab experience even in a remote course. Each unit, I will provide students with a suggested lab activity. Some of these activities may require a few household supplies. Other activities might involve virtual lab simulations.
