1-2 hours per week. Each week the students will be provided with a recording to listen to as well as weekly readings on the classroom board. Each student will also be provided with their individual login to Ck-12, which is a site I will be using to provide additional assignments for the students. This class is designed for students to work at a pace that they see to fit their educational needs, while still interacting with the teacher and other students. In both Ck-12 and on the Outschool classroom page, there will be discussions based on the lesson material, that I will reply with feedback and other students will have the opportunity to do so as well. I am happy to respond to students who send in responses or post their answers to the classroom board. Each quiz in Ck-12 is graded, but the student does have several tries to get the grade they desire. The lesson material will still be available after the class duration if students would like to continue taking notes. A small project will be assigned to go along with the lessons to help to expand knowledge on the concepts discussed. This project can be submitted through the Outschool classroom board or through the Ck-12 site, whichever the student prefers. More information will be provided on the project after enrollment. This class is designed to best suit each student individually, therefore, if a student would like more reading materials or discussion between peers, then I can provide that. Families can also use all of the recordings, discussions, the project, and reading materials the way that they see works best for their student(s).Class Experience

Did you ever wonder what happens when our aquatic environments are not cared for? Take for instance an oil spill or run off from coastal pollution such as home septic systems or contamination from surrounding factories. Have you ever thought about what happens to the environment and the aquatic life living there? In this course, students will learn about the effects of pollution on our aquatic environments from factors such as manufacturing, development, human contribution, and invasive species. They will have the opportunity to learn about events in history that changed our aquatic environment for years to come such as oil spills that have not only impacted our oceans but had devastating consequences for the wildlife in the area. We will also look at potential pollution problems such as from pesticides and unsustainable practices that can have devastating impacts on coastal areas such as estuaries and sea grass beds, which support a wealth of extraordinary marine organisms. Week 1: Introduction and Effects of Nitrogen Pollution Week 2: Pollution from Oil Spills Week 3: Pollution in the Black Sea Week 4: Pollution in Coral Reef Environments There are no pre-requisites required for this course just an interest in protecting the environment. Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. There are no pre-requisites for this course, just a love for animals and the environment. Students will also work with CK-12 an interactive learning platform, that allows students to answer practice tests, read articles, and work in interactive textbooks. Assignments will be assigned in this platform weekly. Each student will be provided with their own login information to access their assignments and readings, which the teacher will set up.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. In the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their life to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
