Everyone knows the musical greats: Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Stravinsky, Wagner, ...the list goes on and on. But what about the WOMEN who influenced music history? They are often left out of the discussion entirely! In this class, we will focus on the female musical greats. From the medeival period to the classical period, to the romantic, and into modern and new age, we will explore some of the most famous FEMALE composers in all of music history! We'll start with a timeline overview of music history and the different musical periods. Some of the women we will discuss include Cassia of Constantinople, Hildegard of Bingen, Clara Schumann, Fannie Mendelssohn, Rosetta Tharpe, Delia Derbyshire, Carole King, Aretha Franklin, and Bjork. There's always something to discover when studying music. Students will enjoy listening to different styles of music from different periods in history as they learn the names of each piece and learn about the woman who composed that piece. We will see pictures of these composers, listen to clips of their music, and learn about their lives and their history. We'll get to know these women and learn about what influenced their musical styles and how they were pioneers in their own ways, especially during several eras when men ruled the music world. Each student will do a short presentation during the last class to showcase his/her favorite composer that we talked about during the session.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about female composers throughout the musical timeline and will do a short presentation on the last day of class.
