3 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Students will be given 5-10 problems to complete and bring to next class to practice the skill that was taught. Each lesson will build on each other so completing the problems to be ready for the new skill is essential.Assessment
Students will be assessed informally through the homework and the class discussions.Class Experience
US Grade 4
Are you a 4th grader? Do you need to review or maintain your math skills? Do you like playing games in math class? Are you a visual learner? If so this is the class for you. This class is meant to review skills learned during the school year. This is a multi-day class that will meet two times a week for two weeks. Each day will start with game time and move into hands-on instruction with practice activities. Game Time: We will play review games covering a variety of topics from your students previous grade level. Games may include tic, tac, toe, Memory, quick flash cards, and Jeopardy. Topics will include addition and subtraction of unlike denominator fractions, multi-digit multiplication & division, one and two step story problems, place value through the millions, and adding and subtracting of fractions and decimals (through the hundred thousandth place). All students will solve the problems on a sheet of paper or individual whiteboard. Hands-on Lesson Time: Lessons will be focused on basic addition and subtraction of fractions and multi-digit multiplication and division. These strategies will involve teacher demonstration and student participation using manipulatives and models. Models taught will involve drawing arrays, using number lines and repeated addition/subtraction. Teacher will use the I Do, We Do, You Do strategy for instruction. Students will watch the teacher demonstrate the strategy, then assist the teacher to complete an example, and lastly, complete an example on their own or in partnerships in Zoom breakout rooms. Partnerships will be set based on the student need and level as assessed during game play. Students will be given common core and standard algorithm strategies to use. Class 1- Solving multi-digit multiplication problems, using standard algorithm and arrays Class 2- Solving long division problems, using repeated subtraction and standard algorithm Class 3- Putting fractions in lowest terms and finding equivalent fractions with mixed numbers and improper fractions- Using models and standard algorithm Class 4- Adding and subtracting unlike denominator fractions- Using number lines and standard algorithm During Game time and Hands-on Lesson time students will have opportunities to share their strategies for solving the problem to teacher and fellow classmates. It is said that when you can teach someone a skill, that is when you have learned it yourself. Through sharing strategies students will be teaching the group and demonstrating their knowledge.
Learning Goals
Students will review math skills using multi-digit multiplication and division and adding/subtracting unlike denominator fractions.
