This unit will teach students about the health risks and social consequences of vaping, including its short- and long-term effects on the body and brain. Students will also learn about the tactics used by the vaping industry to target young people and develop strategies to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions. Health Impacts of Vaping: Exploring physical and mental health effects, including addiction and lung damage. Industry Marketing Tactics: Understanding how companies appeal to youth through flavors, advertising, and social media. Peer and Social Influences: Recognizing and responding to peer pressure. Environmental Effects: Analyzing the environmental harm caused by vaping products. Resources for Support: Learning about tools and programs available to help individuals quit vaping or prevent its use. Multimedia Presentations: Slides and videos to provide evidence-based information. Interactive Exercises: Polls, quizzes, and role-playing scenarios to practice resistance skills. Group Discussions: Open conversations to share ideas and reflect on peer influence. Creative Projects: Opportunities to design awareness campaigns or create informational materials. This lesson dives into the chemicals that are found in ecigarettes and vapes. We also analyze the marketing tactics these companies use to reach young people.

Research the chemicals found in e-cigarettes/vapes
Students will complete an assignment that researches chemicals found in e-cigarettes and vapes and describes the effects on the body.
Lesson 3:
Short and long term effects
In this engaging lesson, you will explore the immediate and lasting impacts of vaping on your health and well-being. Through interactive activities, discussions, and multimedia resources, you’ll uncover how vaping affects the lungs, heart, and brain in the short term and contributes to long-term health issues such as chronic respiratory problems, addiction, and cardiovascular disease.
Lesson 4:
Wrap it up. Support and resources
To conclude the vaping unit, students will reflect on the knowledge they've gained about the short- and long-term effects of vaping, industry tactics, and the social pressures surrounding its use. The focus will shift to actionable steps for personal health and supporting others.
We’ll discuss available resources for those looking to quit vaping, including hotlines, apps, and local community programs. Students will learn how to access and share these resources with peers and family members.

I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Health Education and have taught this unit in high school for the past 7 years. I have also worked with doctors and researchers to provide a seminar for parents and students to attend identifying the dangers of using e-cigarettes/vapes.
