Class Experience

Upon completion of this class, students will have a better understanding of the historical development of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Students will also have a better understanding of the cultural aspects of Hawaii’s Pacific island neighbors. This class will touch on the following aspects of the history and culture of our 50th State:

*Geography of Hawaii
*Unification of the Hawaiian Kingdom
*Impact of Westerners
*Early Industry (sugarcane, pineapple, coffee, whaling)
*The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy
*Pearl Harbor
*Iolani Palace
*Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
*Hula
*Surfing
*Wildlife (**please note that approximately 5 minutes of this class covers animals that are also covered in my "Hawaii's Animal Life" class, so it may be 5 minutes of repeat if your learner has taken that class!!)

This class will be presented via powerpoint presentation and is mostly lectured based, although students will have several opportunities to ask or answer questions. Students will get to meet the animals through photos and a few video clips disbursed throughout the class presentation - - I have found that this keeps them interested and engaged throughout our class time together!

Although homework is not required, students are encouraged to write a few paragraphs after class, to be read out loud to their families.

Students will be encouraged to visit Hawaii, and especially to visit the local historical museum and Iolani Palace (America's only Royal Palace!). After the class, students will be given additional resources to continue on their path to learning more our 50th state!
