Throughout these 9 weeks, we will read the first Harry Potter book. We will be moving at a relatively slow pace for reading to practice comprehension skills and be sure students are able to remember what they read. The reading is expected to be done before our meeting time so we can focus on discussion during our weekly meetings. What students can expect from my teaching approach is that this club is going to be guided by their conversations and feelings about this book. I will often start class by asking for some key information and then ask more opinion based questions to get them talking about the story. Here are some examples of the types of questions I may ask: "Which character was introduced in these chapters? What do you think their role will be in this story? Do you think they are going to help or hurt throughout the story?" My goal is to ask questions that get them thinking and excited to continue to read. There is no background knowledge required for this class. Some students may have watched the movies already and that is completely fine, but they need to be sure not to give others any spoilers! The reading schedule is as follows: Week 1: Background knowledge & Chapter 1 Discussion Week 2: Chapters 2 & 3 Discussion Week 3: Chapters 4 & 5 Discussion Week 4: Chapters 6 & 7 Discussion Week 5: Chapters 8 & 9 Discussion Week 6: Chapters 10 & 11 Discussion Week 7: Chapters 12 & 13 Discussion Week 8: Chapters 14 & 15 Discussion Week 9: Chapters 16 & 17 Discussion | End of book
