US Grade 2 - 4
Whether this is your first time or 5th time reading Book 1, welcome to the magical beginning of the Harry Potter series! This class will help your student think critically about the text, while engaging in interactive discussions and character analysis debates for the assigned chapters each week. Below is the class structure for each week: 15-20 minutes of interactive book discussion. I will have prepared questions, but I also want students to be able to speak freely about what they noticed, what questions they have, and predictions for what is to come. I will encourage all students to speak! 20 minutes for a character analysis debate: In this debate learning style, students will get to work in teams to find evidence to defend the affirmative or negative side of a character's actions from the assigned chapters. **For example: Should Hagrid have used magic? Students will not get to pick which side of the character analysis debate they are on. This will challenge them to think of different character's points of views. Did that character's actions effect other characters? Will it have an effect on what is to come in the story? This higher order thinking activity will motivate your learner to critically think about the characters, while reading independently each week! Here is the reading schedule we will follow: ****Chapters 1-3 BEFORE the first class**** Week 1 HW- Read Chapters 4-6 Week 2 HW- Read Chapters 7-9 Week 3 HW- Read Chapters 10-12 Week 4 HW- Read Chapters 13-15 Week 5- HW Read Chapters 16-17 I hope to have your learner in this unique book club soon! I am a certified elementary teacher and have 6 years experience teaching. I am also a certified reading specialist and love helping learners dive deeper into texts that interest them!
