Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
In this self-paced course your learner will learn and practice high frequency words. High frequency words are words that occur most often in text and should be read automatically. These words typically cannot be decoded using individual letter sound knowledge. This class will provide learners with the foundation necessary to begin reading! The list that we will use is the Fry high frequency word list. Each word will be introduced individually. We will follow a predictable routine for each word. The routine will consist of the teacher saying the word, spelling the word aloud, having the learner spell the word aloud with me, having the learner "trace" the word, and writing the word. After the initial class students will participate in sight word activities to help students commit the word to memory. Students will do activities such as: say the word and tapping out the sounds, using sound boxes to write sounds, matching words to word formation boxes, identify missing letters, spell the word with tiles or magnetic letters, word hunt, as well as writing the word in different elements (sand, pudding, paint, etc.). Students will also have chances to use the words orally as well as in writing. Students will be introduced to 5 words a week. The class will use a variety of teaching styles and tools. The class will include hands on activities, videos, songs, manipulatives, and other highly effective learning strategies. Each class will last between 30 and 45 minutes.
Learning Goals
1. Students will be able to read the first 25 sight words within 3 seconds of seeing the word.
