Unicorns are magical creatures that capture the imagination of adults and kids alike. You can go to any store and find unicorn shirts, unicorn lunch boxes, unicorn bed pillows, and even unicorn toothpaste! This is probably the first place you've ever seen unicorn-themed hands-on science activities! In this self-paced course, students will explore science concepts with a unicorn theme- perfect for every unicorn lover! In this hands-on science class, students will be given instructions for a hands-on science experiment along with a video presentation on the science behind each topic. Each lesson's video will include a presentation about the science behind the topic as well as a video demonstration of the science activity. A link to the videos on the teacher's unlisted YouTube channel will be posted to the Outschool classroom. Students can share pictures or videos of their results with the instructor. The instructor will ask and answer questions in the classroom each week about the science behind the experiment, the students results, and why they got any unexpected results.
This course includes pdf files of all activities. Students will need additional materials each week that can be purchased in most grocery or big box stores or on Amazon. A detailed list of those materials will be provided upon enrollment. Items include glue, food coloring, contact solution, baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, cooking oil, milk, shaving cream, and dish soap.
I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with over two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and over five years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level for over 20 years, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
