Class Experience

Have you ever wondered how strong eggs are? Do you know how to tell if your egg is fresh or rotten? Is there a way to tell if an egg is raw or boiled without cracking it open?

In this one-time class, students will learn all about eggs and be able to address all of the above questions. We will learn how to differentiate between raw and boiled eggs through spinning them, identify whether an egg is fresh or rotten through floating them, and investigate how strong an egg is through experimenting with them.

My class will consist of discussion, trivia, some fun video clips, and most importantly, hands-on experiments.

No prior knowledge is needed for this class. Just put your thinking caps on and get ready for some egg-cellent fun!

Learning Goals

Students will learn:

1) the basic structure of an egg
2) why egg shells are so strong
3) some fun facts about eggs
4) what a hypothesis is

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Since we will be working with raw eggs (if the parent permits) and eggshells, parents can be nearby to supervise if they deem necessary.
Supply List
(NOTE: These materials are recommended, but optional. It's much more exciting for a student to experiment it with me, but if not, the student is still more than welcome to just watch me conduct the experiments.)

- 1 boiled egg
- 3 raw eggs
- 3 bottle caps (to put under raw eggs, so we can test how much weight an egg can withstand; they should all be the same height) OR an egg carton
- a cup filled with enough water to submerge an egg
- salt

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Miss Lin. I've been a teacher for over 10 years in California and Taiwan. I have experience teaching elementary, middle, and high school students, but my focus has been mostly on elementary. As a teacher, my favorite subjects to teach are definitely Art and Science, but really, all subjects are fascinating to study. For the past 3 years, I was my school's elementary student affairs director, which meant I went into all of the classrooms from grades 1-6 regularly, with a focus on on promoting character education and developing a tighter knit community within the school.

I believe teaching is all about making learning fun and interesting, through various means including games, songs, stories, etc.

I have two cats named Socks and Shoes, who often sneak into the frame to say hello!
