Description
Class Experience
In this 15-day online course, learners will become active participants in their own learning by creating an interactive notebook which then becomes a great resource for reviewing and studying the covered concepts. No prior knowledge is required. Page numbers given refer to the required workbook. From the author: "The intent of the Interactive Notebook series is to help students make sense of new information. Textbooks often present more facts and data than students can process at one time....
Learners will improve their understanding of general life science concepts under three categories: structure of life, classification of living organisms, and ecological communities.
I have taught science at all grade levels in public schools, home schools, and college. My first college degree is in Secondary Education (grades 6-12) with four concentrations (including Biology, Earth Science, and Life Science). I am also certified as a EC-Grade 4 Generalist and a Grades 4-8 Generalist. In addition, I have taught Human Anatomy and Physiology at the college level.
Learners may need extra time after class to complete their interactive notebooks. Learners will benefit most if they read over the assigned materials prior to each class time.
NOTE: I do NOT receive additional benefits through commissions or the like. I am NOT an affiliate for any website or subscription company package NOR am I an owner of any online store. Each learner will need an empty notebook (spiral bound, composition, or binder with loose leaf paper) with at least 35 blank pages. They will also need scissors, glue stick, colored pencils (markers are not recommended), and 3 tabs (for marking the first lesson of each unit). Each learner will need to purchase their own interactive workbook for use in class. The specific workbook needed can be found at this website: <https://www.rainbowresource.com/product/004650/Interactive-Notebook-Life-Science.html?>. You will be using both the front and back of each page. Each learner may either buy two copies of the book OR the learner may hand write the notes from one side of the notebook page to their Input page (right page) and using the other side of the notebook page for their Output page (left page). Each unit consists of two pages. Why colored pencils? From the author: "Color helps the brain remember information better."
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be assessed by informal assessment. Assignments will be completed during class. The interactive notebook rubric provided in the required workbook can also be used by parents as an informal assessment at home after class.
