Welcome! My name is Carrie Smith and after 12 years running a private homeschool program teaching around-the-world art to kids (including several classes here on Outschool during the pandemic), I have embarked upon a new journey sparked by an online art class I took with my 15-year-old daughter a couple of years ago. After taking this painting class together, we both became hooked, and the art supplies have never left the family room table since! I continued painting my heart out until one day, I took a different turn with my art and decided to cut up my artwork into pieces and use them as collage fodder. With these pieces, I created my first collage piece that literally spoke to my heart. A new passion was born! From there, I honed in on my style and began hand-painting very detailed, colorful collage pieces and crafting vibrant collage statement pieces that I have been selling to various people all over the country ever since. My process for painting is unique, and I am super excited to share this process with my Outschool students. Your child will end up with one final collage piece and many, many more hand-painted collage pieces to use on picture frames, greeting cards, canvases, etc.! This one class will lead to a summer of creativity, for sure!
Learning Goals
Have fun discussions with fellow learners and a teacher who wholeheartedly loves conversing and interacting with kids of all ages!
Walk away with their own personal set of hand-painted collage pieces to be used for future collage art (on canvas, greeting cards, picture frames, etc.).
Syllabus
5 Lessons
over 1 WeekLesson 1:
Day 1 - PAINTING OUR BASE PIECES
We will learn a bit about collage and then paint our base pieces (leaves, flowers, and various shapes). I will share the secrets I have for painting shapes that work in flow, both colorfully and cohesively, across our final college piece. **Note: it is important (but not necessary) that students have a round paintbrush for this portion of the class.

Lesson 2:
Day 2 - ADDING VIBRANT DETAILS TO OUR PIECES
We will add beautiful hand-painted details to our base pieces with paintbrushes and simple tools that can be found around the house. Students will be amazed at the beauty they can create during this class!

Lesson 3:
Day 3 - CUTTING AND ORGANIZING OUR PIECES
We will spend class time cutting out all of our pieces and organizing them in the same way I do when I create my collage art. I have found a proven system that enables a more free-flowing creation process when it comes time to create our final art.

Lesson 4:
Day 4 - PAINTING THE BACKGROUND
We will learn many techniques for painting a background for our collage art. Students can choose their own colors and I will guide them on what might work best to create depth, flow, and cohesiveness across our final piece. All of these techniques are based on what I have learned personally through my own art process.

Pre-Requisites
All skills in this class can be learned, however learners with no experience in painting or who do not enjoy cutting shapes with scissors might encounter frustration. Students should be able to focus well for each 55-minute class.
Supply List
SUPPLY LIST (learners will have access to a printable supply list): * 3-4 pieces of 8.5 X 11-inch watercolor paper, recommended (we will use this paper to paint all of our collage pieces on). You can use cardstock, but the thicker the cardstock, the better. * 1 additional 8.5 X 11-inch piece of watercolor paper (this will be the background piece for our art so cardstock is not recommended as it takes away from the quality of the final piece). * Acrylic paint: 2+ shades of green (for our leaves), white (MUST HAVE - for leaf details. Copic opaque white paint works really well, too!), taupe or any other similar neutral color, 4+ various bright colors of choices. * Two large-ish jars of water * Paper towels * 2 paper plates for palettes (one for leaf colors, one for flower colors) * 1 #6 round paintbrush and 1 #4 round paintbrush, or another paintbrush(es) similar in shape (a flat paintbrush will not work). This set is awesome and affordable, but not required: https://amzn.to/3Rv7MSY * 1 super-fine paintbrush, REQUIRED (for painting fine lines and details) * Qtips (any shape or size) * Sharpened pencil (the tip will be dipped in paint) * Scissors * Quality glue stick *OPTIONAL: Curved, fine-tip tweezers (this makes arranging our collage pieces super easy and fun!) https://amzn.to/3RyzRsO *OPTIONAL: Frame for displaying their beautiful piece of collage art!
