We will make the baby monster in class together.Grading
Students will be informally assessed on their understanding of Punnett Squares and genetics during class discussions and the monster-building activity.Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 10
In this one-time class, students will explore the basics of genetics by predicting the traits of a Halloween monster using Punnett Squares. We will begin with an introduction to dominant and recessive traits, followed by hands-on practice creating Punnett Squares to predict various monster traits (e.g., fur color, eye type, arm length). Students will work in small groups or individually to determine the genetic outcomes, and then use candy to build their own "baby monster" based on the predicted traits. Teaching Style: Interactive and hands-on. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, collaborate, and express creativity during the monster-building activity.
Learning Goals
Understand how dominant and recessive traits are inherited.
Be able to construct and interpret Punnett Squares.

Parental Guidance
In this class, students will be using scissors to cut materials, which requires careful handling. Parents are encouraged to supervise or assist their children if needed to ensure safety. Please ensure a safe workspace where students can cut materials without risk. Additionally, small candies are used in the activity, so parental guidance is recommended to prevent choking hazards, especially for younger children.
This class involves candy, so please notify the instructor of any allergies.
Supply List
Candy for building the monster (e.g., M&Ms, Twizzlers, Candy Corn) Printable worksheet (will be provided in advance) Scissors, glue, and markers
External Resources
