What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be working daily on developing habits and getting their rooms under control. Learners should expect to spend 10-15 minutes daily on independent tasks in addition to watching and participating along with the videos and creating their FlipGrids.

Class Experience

We will spend 4 weeks working together to build habits that lead to a clean, decluttered and organized bedroom space. Each week, learners will be directed to a Google Slide which will include two original video lessons, a printable Habit Builder page which outlines daily tasks and gives a space to track progress, and links to two FlipGrid boards where students can upload a short video or audio clip of their progress.

Class camaraderie will be built through student-to-student interaction both in the classroom and on FlipGrid. Students will watch and comment on other learners FlipGrid Videos. In this class, I function as a teacher and coach - and I will coach learners through a weekly habit challenge using the Habit Builder page. Learners will upload their completed page for feedback and to work together to meet the weekly challenge. There will also be many opportunities for teacher-to-student interaction both through teacher feedback given on FlipGrid posts and on learner uploaded Habit Builder pages. I will also be available to answer questions, chat and provide encouragement and support in the Outschool classroom.

This class will be most effective for those who struggle to keep their rooms clean and will have a heavy focus on progress not perfection. Learners will be encouraged to celebrate their victories along the way - not just when their room is “finished.”

Course Breakdown:

Week One: Videos will introduce our first habits and begin the decluttering process. We'll have a Decluttering Scavenger Hunt - posting photos of items we have decluttered in a variety of categories.

Week Two: Video lessons will cover both the Visibility Rule and Hidden Corners, and will have a Before and After Online Show and Tell where learners will show the progress they are most proud of from the week.

Week Three: We will consider our room as a container and talk about what our room needs to hold, and what our limits are. We'll talk about micro and macro organizing, and hidden and visual organizing options. Learners will draw and post their ideal organizing schema to discuss with other learners.

Week Four: Video lessons will question the difference between "Tidy" and "Clean" - Now that our spaces are tidy, tasks this week will be focussed on deeper cleaning and learners will complete a Clean and Tidy Bingo Card.

Other Details

Supply List
Leaners will need a timer (on their phone or other device, or a separate timer is fine), a garbage bag, recycling bins (depending on recycling programs in your area), and a donatable donations box or other place to put items for donation. It would be helpful for parents and learners to discuss what will happen with items they declutter in advance of the first week. Do they need to put things aside to hand down to friends or relatives? Will everything go to Goodwill or a local donations center?

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a teacher, a tutor and a mom from British Columbia, Canada. I currently am teaching full time in the public school system and enjoy tutoring and coaching part-time on Outschool as well.

As a child academics came very easily for me, but personal organization did not. I was the kind of kid who had a messy room and a messy desk, and later a messy locker, apartment and car! Kids who struggle with math or writing, often get support. Kids who struggle with life skills instead tend to get judged and treated like they are just lazy or don't care. I cared and my inability to figure out how to keep things tidy was frustrating, stressful and embarrassing!

I have studied and learned ways to work with my brain to get and keep things clean and organized. I love working with kids and teens who need a little extra encouragement, support and training in this area - and offer judgement-free, kindness based coaching for kids.

I really hope to get to meet and work with your children.
