Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Do you struggle with reading in science and history class? Do you find it difficult to sequence events, find the main idea, or write a summary?

Using visual presentations of short articles students will be taught the five text features and structures that are found in non-fiction reading. Each day we will read a different article in either science or history.

Students will learn reading strategies that allow them to identify key terms and ideas in addition to learning how to identify the main idea and summarize passages.

Students will learn how to read using critical thinking skills and understand that non-fiction passages are read differently than fiction passages.

Students should be reading at a 7th-grade reading level or above for this course. Students do not need to have prior science or history knowledge to be successful in this course.

Mini grammar and vocabulary lessons will be included with each lesson.

I use Pear Deck to allow for students to interact throughout the lesson. Pear Deck also allows students to post their answers and writing individually.

Day 1: descriptive text-science
Day 2: sequence/chronological-science/history
Day 3: compare/contrast-science
Day 4: cause/effect-history
Day 5: problem/solution-social studies

Please reach out to me for a day and time that works best for your learner, if you need a different class schedule.
