Does your child receive enough writing practice during the summer months? If not, this is a course that will provide a refresher on skills and strategies that are used in three genres of writing: Explanatory, Persuasive, and Narrative texts. This continuing education course will delve deeper into the strategies that will help your child become a polished and successful writer by focusing on and practicing different strategies for introductions, bodies, and closings of their essays. Each essay will consist four or five written paragraphs. Your child will select which number or paragraphs they are most comfortable with. Course content will be presented using PowerPoint Slides. Make sure your child has some essay writing experience before taking this course. THIS COURSE WILL MEET FOR 15 DAYS. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` COURSE OBJECTIVES: + This course will be presented using a PowerPoint Presentation. + Students will practice writing 3 types of essays: Explanatory, Persuasive, and Narrative. + Each type of essay will be practiced 5 times with a new or different topic each time. + MOST lessons will have an exemplar or a model essay to examine the structure. + Students will share their responses aloud upon completion. + I will provide a verbal critique of their finished draft if the students share it. + Letter or Numerical grades are not given in this course. + Students will and should document the strategies in their notebooks for continued perusal/reviewing. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` EXAMPLE STRATEGIES ADDRESSED FOR INTRODUCTIONS, BODIES, and CLOSINGS: + Imagery + Reflection ending + Dialogue + Surprise ending + Key Word + Cause & Effect + Problem & Solution + Compare & Contrast + Background + Question + Scenario ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` COURSE AGENDA: THIS IS A 15-DAY COURSE. DAYS 1 - 5 - EXPLANATORY Essays REVIEW: Paragraph and Essay Elements (topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence) EXAMINE Explanatory Exemplars while focusing on the above elements. CONSTRUCT a four or five-paragraph cohesive essay when given an Explanatory task. DAYS 6 - 10 - PERSUASIVE Essays REVIEW: Paragraph and Essay Elements (topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence) EXAMINE Persuasive Exemplars while focusing on the above elements. CONSTRUCT a four or five-paragraph cohesive essay when given a Persuasive writing task. DAYS 11 - 15 - NARRATIVE Essays REVIEW: Paragraph and Essay Elements (topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence) EXAMINE Narrative Exemplars while focusing on the above elements. CONSTRUCT a four or five-paragraph cohesive essay when given a Narrative writing task. PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS MUST HAVE SOME ESSAY WRITING EXPERIENCE BEFORE TAKING THIS COURSE.
