Class Experience

In this class, students will practice various reading skills needed for Kindergarten and first grade. The students will practice reading high frequency words (sight words), blending sounds, and other techniques that will help them learn to read successfully. These skills will be taught using slides, songs, games, videos, and reading passages/books. Each time that we meet, we will practice in the order below to keep consistency going.
First, review letter sounds, blends, or digraphs. Then, we will practice reading and using sight words in sentences. We will discuss/review reading strategies to help students when they get stuck on unknown words. Lastly, each student will practice reading a reading passage. If students are reading a book, they will make predictions, answer questions to help with comprehension, and sometimes go on story walks to help the reading make more sense. Students will get assistance reading as necessary while they are reading their passage. We won't start with books right away. Students will begin with reading short passages and gradually moving on to reading pages in books.
Through email, I will also provide parents with some materials to help their child practice the skills worked on during class. This way parents can help reinforce what was learned while not in class. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this course.

Learning Goals

During this 2 week course the learning goals below are what we will be focused on achieving:
-Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of texts.
-The students will be able to apply how print is organized as they learn to read from left to right, match spoken word to print, read commonly used sight words, use beginning digraphs to decode, and blend beginning, middle, and ending sounds to recognize and read words.
-The students will be able to use semantic clues and syntax to expand their vocabulary while reading.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello,

My name is Nicole Jaeger. I am currently a first grade teacher. I teach reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I plan on teaching all of those subjects on out school along with teaching Spanish to young learners as well. I have been teaching for over 16 years in various settings such as childcare centers, charter schools, and private schools. In March I began my online teaching experience due to COVID19 distance learning. I have learned so much in such a small amount of time and look forward to teaching, motivating, and encouraging my students to keep the learning going in fun creative ways. I have my VA State teaching Certification. I just recently received my TESOL certification. I love the quote, "Teachers who love teaching, teach students to love learning". Having a true love of learning will get students so far in life and I'd love to be a part of their success as they achieve great things and develop a love of learning. Furthermore, I love spending time with my family and friends. I am married and have a beautiful daughter who already has tons of personality. I am trying my best to be a phenomenal role model for her and my students.
