Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 4
I am so excited to offer my Guided Reading lessons, now as a private 1 on 1 class for grades 1 to 5. Please take a look at my class format below to see if this class is a good fit for your learner. I am a kind, caring and positive teacher! Let's have fun reading together! Guided Reading will help your child develop reading proficiency, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. We will be using digital books in this lesson. This private class will give your learner more opportunity to practice literacy skills. Each class will follow the same format using a different book: * Your learner will be introduced to reading strategies: breaking words into parts, stretching sounds out, looking for smaller words within a word, finding the base word, adding endings and beginning and using pictures to help solve tricky words. * Your learner will be introduced to a new story. We will do a book walk. This happens before reading. We look at the book title, cover and pictures in the story and make predictions about what the book will be about. * I will go over some of the challenging words that will be in the story to help make the text more familiar for your learner. * I will model how to read a sentence with a challenging word from the story, using a reading strategy. * Your learner will read the story aloud, implementing reading strategies when needed with support from me. * Your learner will answer several comprehension questions. Please see the list of example questions. Each set of questions will be unique and based on the story. * For learners at a grade 3 to 5 reading level, we will write a written summary of the story. I will model writing on my screen. Together, we will write part of the summary, making sure descriptive word choice is included. Then your learner will copy down what we wrote together. Then your learner will be encouraged to add a couple of sentences to the writing piece on their own with support from the teacher when needed. I add descriptive words on the screen to help support your learner's own sentences. Please have a piece of paper and pencil on hand. * For learners at a grade 1 to 2 reading level, we will write a sentence together and your learner can copy it down. Then your learner will be encouraged to write a personal sentence with support from me. * We will end class with a vocabulary digital game. Each class will have different comprehension questions. Here is a list of some examples: * How does the character feel? What words or descriptions does the author give to support your answers? * What are you wondering? What questions do you have? * Predict what will happen next. * What caused (character in this chapter) to .....? What was the effect of ....? * What was important on this page? Why? * Summarize what you read. What's the most important part? * How do Jack & Annie feel about their adventure? * How does each character react to....? * What do you think this word means? * Why did the character say....? * How are ____ & ____ similar? How are they different? * Did the character change? Why? The Digital Books we will be reading were written by Aylin Claashen. No need to purchase anything!
