In this one hour class, students will learn the overview of the science behind making mistakes and how to develop a positive growth mindset. We will learn the overview of; - The science of our brain when we learn and when we make mistakes - The language of a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset - Tools and strategies to develop a Growth Mindset By the end of our class, students will; - Understand the difference of a Fixed and Growth Mindset - Create a hands on project representing their brain when making mistakes - Sort language of a Fixed and Growth Mindset - Discover the impact of using Growth Mindset language to self and to others - Analyze and discuss scenarios with different mindsets - Set a personal mindset goal I will provide instruction through discussion, as well as visual aids such as slides and video clips from Class Dojo's Big Ideas Program. My teaching style is centered around student-teacher and student-student relationships. The class will largely focus on discussion, sharing ideas and making personal connections to the conversations. Students do not need any prior knowledge to participate in this class and discussion. For a more detailed course, students and families may wish to enroll in "Growing a Growth Mindset" Camp. This camp is an extended version of this one-time course that digs deeper into each topic and provides more time for additional application and activities.
Learning Goals
1. Students will understand the overview of the science of the brain when learning something new, making mistakes and trying a new strategy.
2. Students will be able to define and explain the difference between a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset.
3. Students will be able to determine language used when demonstrating a Growth Mindset.
4. Students will set a personal goal for their own mindset in overcoming obstacles.
5. Students will collaborate with peers through discussions and activities.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified teacher for grades K-6. I received both my BA and MA from the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. My degrees are in both Elementary Education and Curriculum & Instruction. I have taught the content of this course both in person and online for 5 years. My teaching philosophy relies heavily on student exploration and independence of learning by fostering a Growth Mindset.
