Class Experience

Beginner Level
The purpose of this course is to teach & encourage the "growth mindset". Changing your mindset to believe in yourself, sets you up for a life full of happiness. Life can be a journey where you make a choice to build upon your intelligence and abilities. When something is hard, how do we react to it? That is what makes the difference!

The purpose of this class will be to provide the children as each other's "journal buddies". I will be a part of the group to guide & structure the class, I want it to be a fun experience where students are excited to be there. This will be a relaxed environment where everyone knows this is their special time to connect with each other and discuss important topics. If the student wants to partake in the discussion without writing or draw pictures instead of write, I will not force a certain type of participation. My expectation is that everyone is kind to eachother and interact with eachother in a way that adds to the experience for everyone.

Students will need their own hardcopy version of "The Big Life Journal, 2nd edition". We will work through one part of chapter each week, this class will cover the first half of the journal:

Class 1: All About Me & My Superheroes
Classes 2 & 3: Believe in Yourself
Classes 4 & 5: Mistakes Help You Grow
Classes 6 & 7: Be Persistent
Classes 8 & 9: Be Grateful
Classes 10 & 11: Be Unique, Be You
Class 12: Review

The students will have a podcast they can listen to before class (optional). We will use class time to complete each chapter's journal pages and discuss them. I will have additional questions and teaching points about the Growth Mindset to start class with. However, the students will be encouraged to discuss, ask questions, make connections, and interact with each other.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to the growth mindset, identify it in themselves, practice it and connect it to their own lives and experiences.

I have 6 years of experience as a classroom special education teacher, 20 years of experience as a tutor, and 5 years of experience as a homeschool mom. In all 3 settings, I realized the best thing for a student was to develop a mindset where they believe in themself and can feel successful. I discovered this journal & "growth mindset" as a homeschooler and have used it with my own children but the experience of having friends as their "journal buddy" has brought it to another level.
