Growing My Reading Powers: Read a Comic Book With Mrs. Day (Guided Reading C-D)

Young readers will engage in an interactive reading lesson as we get to know each other and practice skills for early literacy. This is an interactive, one-time class. It also serves as a peek into my multi-day guided reading classes.

Class Experience

During this one-time class, early readers will engage in activities related to use of reading strategies, sight word automaticity, fluency practice, using word family in reading and writing, and reading comprehension through lessons and activities geared towards learners reading at a levels C-D. This class is designed to both a freestanding class and a peek into what my multi-day and ongoing guided reading courses are like.

The book we will engage with during this class will be levels C-D. All readers will be encouraged to think and respond independently and as a group. It will be up to each reader if they choose to read aloud a portion of our book to the class or if they choose to read in their head/mute while reading. Readers will have opportunities to respond and share their thinking to the whole group; but it will be each reader's choice if they choose to share aloud or to read a portion of the text aloud. I will kindly support and encourage all readers in this class!

During class, we will: practice phonemic awareness skills, do word work with 3-4 sight words, and model/practice applying reading strategies as we read our book together.

I value getting to know each child as a reader. I always work to differentiate instruction and encourage young readers. I find that readers are more willing and braver about trying new things and interacting as they get to know their teacher and classmates better. That is a big reason why I plan to offer a variation of this class as a multi-day class as well where the same group of students meets for a few weeks of lessons and books.

This class will be a great opportunity for sharing a fun book and early reader reading instruction, but I think you will find that meeting weekly through one of my multi-day classes or attending this class multiple times will prove to be a great way to boost your child’s confidence and reading powers long term. During my multi-day classes, we have more time to get to know each other and for me to get to know each individual reader. I decided to offer this class as an option for families whose scheduled might not allow for a multi-day class and as a way for families to get to know me as a teacher before committing to a multi-day class.

Although I find great value in readers holding a physical books, students do not need to have a copy of the book we will be reading for this one time class. For some of the work we will be doing it will actually be beneficial if they have never seen the book before anyways. The book we will be reading together and working with for this class will be a fiction book called “My Pet Spot” by Liza Charlesworth or another book from the Scholastic Series "First Little Comics" if there are repeat students in class.

Any books read for this class will be read with the permission of Scholastic to use for teaching/tutoring purposes.

Hello Families,
My name is Danielle Day. I have a passion for inspiring young learners! I have a degree in Elementary Education. I have taught in both homeschool and public elementary school settings over the the last 18 years. I have also taught ESL online. Aside from teaching, I have coached basketball and a Building Brick League Team. I think learning should be authentic, engaging, and fun! My husband and I have 3 sons. As a family, we enjoy playing games, reading, riding our bikes, building with building bricks, and exploring nature.

- If you do not see dates listed for a class, that does not mean that I'm no long teaching the class or that it isn't awesome. It just means that right now, I have more class ideas than available hours in the day. I try to balance opening a variety of classes and leaving myself some time to be able to accommodate requested classes. Please never hesitate to send me a message requesting that I open more sessions of a class!

I hope to meet your learner(s) in class soon!
Have a great day,
Mrs. Day
