During each week of this class we will focus on learning 4 new chords, one new scale position and reviewing what we already know.  We will learn each mode and position of the Pentatonic scale (5 positions) and the Diatonic scale (7 standard positions, 7 sweeping patterns), arpeggios for major, minor and diminished triads (and their inversions) as well as elements of music theory and ear training.  After learning the Pentatonic scales we will also explore how to play the blues and how to use scales and chords to improvise.   All students need to know how to do is play a single note clearly on the guitar and arrive ready to learn with their guitars tuned and playable.  We will start with three note chords and progress toward learning and understanding the sound and function of 4 and 5 note chords as the course advances.  At the completion of this course, students should have the tools they need to improvise over chord progressions, play along with basic songs and hear chord qualities.  My teaching style focuses on explaining fundamental concepts through mixing play with practical exercises and challenges.  As each week passes, each student will have more practical skills at their fingertips to choose from.  I structure the course to include exercises that can be polished at home after the class as well.  Each weekly module builds on the module of the previous week.  We will begin each class with a warm up that incorporates the scales/chords/arpeggios of each previous week in a efficient and mnemonic method.  This allows students to review the skills they have gained at any time after the course is over with a warm up that takes less than 5 minutes!
