US Grade 1 - 2
In this one-time class, learners will be learning about skip counting, weight, addition, and money using an interactive pretend grocery store game! At the beginning of class, the learners and teacher will have an introductory discussion about food and where it comes from. Some discussion questions may include: “Where does the food in your pantry come from?”, “How does food get to the grocery store or onto the shelves?”, “Is the food at the store free?”, “Do we know how much it costs?”. Visuals and pictures of different grocery stores will be used in class. Next, learners will visit the virtual produce section of the grocery store and learn about the different ways that produce is sold and purchased - per item, per pound, pre-packaged, etc. Learners will have the opportunity to choose some of their favorite produce items, find the per pound or item price of each item, and use skip counting or addition to determine the total cost of those items. Then, learners will make a sandwich from the deli. To do this, learners must calculate how much of each sandwich component they need. If time allows, learners can also choose a side dish and learn how to weigh it. Finally, learners will learn about bag tax, which is implemented in many states around the country. Learners will calculate this bag tax by skip counting. Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 6 to 8, or 1st to 2nd grade. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
