Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
When a student takes this class they can expect a fun and interactive journey through the story of how Hercules faced off against the Stymphalian Birds. Class will first begin with a short meet-and-greet. Once acquainted, we will delve into a dramatic telling of some of Hercules' exploits. Images and some video will be shared to help bring the story to life and as the storyteller, my goal will be to use my theatrical and voice-artist background to make the tale memorable. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions and will also be posed questions to test their listening and comprehension skills. Class sizes are kept small to ensure students are given ample opportunity to interact with the teacher and are encouraged to keep microphones on (if surroundings are quiet) so they may freely communicate. Specifically, we will learn about how and why the Stymphalian Birds were pets of Artemis and sacred to Ares the god of war, Athena providing Hercules with a special rattle forged by Hephaestus, how Hephaestus was created and acquired his limp, and finally Hercules chasing off the Stymphalian birds.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about Hercules, Eurystheus, Copreus, Ares, Athena, Hera, Zeus, and Hephaestus. Students will be encouraged to speak, ask questions, and be questioned themselves with a focus on comprehension skills and critical thinking.
